Description
Arriving in Japan in 1862—just 8 years after the nation ended its two centuries of isolation—Sir Ernest Mason Satow remained for 21 years as secretary to the British Legation. During his stay Satow immersed himself in Japanese language, history, religion, and customs, which he chronicled in the diary that became the foundation of this history. Satow's privileged position afforded him access to many of the significant Japanese political leaders of the era, giving him a unique perspective on the downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Meiji Restoration, which paved the way to modernity for Japan.
