Description
Paul Jennings was born into slavery on the plantation of James and Dolley Madison in Virginia, and became part of the Madison household staff at the White House. After he was finally emancipated by Senator Daniel Webster later in life, he would give an aged and impoverished Dolley Madison money from his own pocket, write the first White House memoir, and see his sons fight with the Union Army in the Civil War. A former director of museum education at Jefferson's Monticello and Madison's Montpelier, Elizabeth Dowling Taylor gives us an engaging and much-needed portrait of a remarkable man. Annette Gordon-Reed, the Pulitzer Prize–winning historian who penned The Hemingses of Monticello, provides a foreword.
