Description
The compositions of Alfred Schnittke (19341998) are known for their exquisite construction, their embrace of material from disparate sources, their predisposition for melancholia, and their tremendous beauty, while his mixed German, Jewish, and Russian background seemed to make him something of an outsider wherever he went. Created from his essays in various languages, illustrated with musical examples in his own hand, and supplemented with an interview with his friend, the cellist and scholar Alexander Ivashkin, this book becomes one of the composer's last works. Schnittke speaks of his life, his works, other composers (especially his Russian associates), performers, a painter, a writer, and topics in 20th-century music ranging from the mixing of styles to jazz, from tone color to paradox in Stravinsky. The volume is rounded out with reflections of some of Schnittke's contemporaries and a foreword by his friend Mstislav Rostropovich.
