Description
Originally released in 1974, Inspiration Information was rediscovered in 2001 by David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Now it's back, augmented with four bonus tracks. The set's second CD, Wings of Love, spotlights 14 more new-to-CD tracks, written from 1975–2000 by Shuggie Otis (born Johnny Alexander Veliotes Jr., he's the son of the late, great R&B bandleader Johnny Otis). Shuggie's proprietary blend of funk, soul, jazz, blues, and psychedelia—on which he plays all instruments except strings and horns—is a little bit Sly Stone, a little bit Stevie Wonder.

"Shuggie's music comes fully formed and highly charged. Influenced by his father and vaunted as a sideman to the stars from a young age, he reveals his special genius here, track after track…. With any luck, the 59-year-old Otis may now justifiably get the attention he deserves."—Winnipeg Free Press

"The title track of Inspiration … is a funk tour de force of intertwined lead and background vocals, organ, guitar, bass and drums…. On the sweetly sung, lyrically epistolary 'Island Letter,' the Rhythm King [analog drum machine] lends a near-bossa nova feel that turns exotic with layers of strings, percussion, guitar, organ and electric piano. It's easy to see why these liquid, fantastically illusive grooves became so attractive in later years to artists utilizing samples. Like 'Island Letter,' 'Sparkle City' is transporting, in this case to an urban dreamscape."—All Music Guide
