Description
Charles Hamilton was one of those extraordinary 18th-century gentlemen who, like Lord Cobham at Stowe and Henry Hoare at Stourhead, turned their gardens into works of art. Inspired by his time in Italy, Hamilton set out to transform the "accursed hill" at Painshill into a picturesque landscape, complete with a serpentine lake and water wheel, a Turkish tent, a Chinese bridge, a ruined abbey, a grotto, and a hermitage occupied by an actual hermit. His Surrey garden ranked with the best of its day but its decline was rapid and it lay forgotten until it was rediscovered in the 1970s. Following a 30-year restoration, Painshill Park is now visited by thousands and even its famous vineyard is flourishing again. This book celebrates this remarkable landscape and its rejuvenation, illustrated with then-and-now archival photos and large color photos, as well as reproductions of art inspired by the estate.
