Description
Redman's first recording to feature an orchestral ensemble, this set of 12 ballads includes the standards "Lush Life," "Easy Living," "Stardust," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" as well as Lennon & McCartney's "Let It Be," an Adagio by Bach, and Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes." New songs number Redman's own "Final Hour" and "Let Me Down Easy," while pianist Brad Mehldau chimes in with "Last Glimpse of Gotham." For those new to Redman, he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 1991 and has continued to branch out with distinction ever since.

"The saxophonist's appearances in the Village continue to attract a mob scene…. He plays in an aggressively engaging fashion, armed to the teeth with prodigious instrumental technique. But sheer chops are less his goal than accessibility—and he makes the most intricate bebop more user-friendly not by dumbing it down, but by playing it with such exuberant charisma."—Will Friedwald, Wall Street Journal

"Redman is one of the most visible jazz musicians of the last 15 years, which says something not just about his natural flow as an improviser and his command as a bandleader, but also about his willingness to use words ... to represent jazz to the outside world."—NYTimes
