Description
The second program in the series focuses on World War II, from the outbreak of war in Europe on September 1, 1939, to the atomic destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan during August 1945. Images depict the fighting in Europe, North Africa, China, the Eastern Front, the Atlantic and Pacific battles, and the Nomandy invasion. The second half describes the rise of atomic weapons and increased tension between the United States and the Soviet Union in the aftermath of World War II. Included is footage of GIs being exposed to atomic blasts, the arrest of Communist agents, civil defense drills, Senator Joe McCarthy, the Berlin Wall, the Bay of Pigs invasion, and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

This unconventional documentary series examines warfare in the 20th century, principally through vintage black and white newsreels shot by Britain's Pathé News (much of it unfamiliar to American audiences). There are no onscreen historians offering perspective, and the only background information is provided by occasional screens of scrolling text, allowing viewers to interpret the newsreel footage for themselves.
