Wild was a young, 30-year-old virtuoso when these performances emanated over the airwaves from New York City on programs like The Piano Playhouse. Works include Domenico Scarlatti's Sonata in D Major, K. 96; Edward Alexander MacDowell's Hexantanz ("Witches' Dance") Op. 17, No. 2; and Chopin's Polonaise in A-flat Major, Op. 53. This Ivory Classics disc is part of a career overview of Earl Wild, born in 1915, whose playing was already "a source of wonder" by the time he turned six, according to Time magazine. A concert hall veteran as a teenager, Wild joined Arturo Toscanini's NBC Symphony and performed a breakout radio broadcast of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with that orchestra in 1942. Two years later, he gave the first piano recital on American television. From his vast repertoire, Wild made more than 100 recordings reflecting "not only lofty technical standards but a striking musical sophistication," wrote LA Times music critic Daniel Cariaga. The Chicago Tribune marveled that Wild's "polished pianism, knowing application of color and refined poetic sensibility make every piece come alive." We treasure these masterful and thoroughly enjoyable performances of the late, great American virtuoso, and hope you will too.

"The Wild magic shines forth in the brilliant filigree in MacDowell and Mendelssohn, in the pearly play of the Rachmaninov G Major Prelude, and the brittle salon style of Mussorgsky's Children's Piece, with its look ahead to Balakirev's Islamey. The Liszt B Minor Sonata is Wild's signature piece … both volatile and poetic at once. Like Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy, the single-movement piece seems to fall into a series of marked episodes which Wild is careful to shape with architectural and harmonic care…. The Chopin Polonaise has suave articulation without jingoistic pomposity."—Audiophile Auditions
