Description
Popular Iberian and Gallic miniatures from the 19th and 20th centuries by Falla, Albéniz, Debussy, Granados, Moszkowski, Mompou, and Ravel take on a new luster in the refined and poetic playing of Earl Wild. They include Debussy's "Clair de lune," Falla's "Miller's Dance" from the Three-Cornered Hat, and "Ritual Fire Dance" from El amor brujo, and the Malagueña from Albéniz's España. This Ivory Classics disc is part of a career overview of Earl Wild, born in 1915, whose playing was already "a source of wonder" by the time he turned six, according to Time magazine. A concert hall veteran as a teenager, Wild joined Arturo Toscanini's NBC Symphony and performed a breakout radio broadcast of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with that orchestra in 1942. Two years later, he gave the first piano recital on American television. From his vast repertoire, Wild made more than 100 recordings reflecting "not only lofty technical standards but a striking musical sophistication," wrote LA Times music critic Daniel Cariaga. The Chicago Tribune marveled that Wild's "polished pianism, knowing application of color and refined poetic sensibility make every piece come alive." We treasure these masterful and thoroughly enjoyable performances of the late, great American virtuoso, and hope you will too.

"Wild's performances offer scintillant playing where required: in the tangy rhythms of Albéniz's "Castilla," the brilliant outer sections of the Moszkowski, in the darting of Debussy's goldfish, or in the ending of Ravel's "Jeux d'eau," which he invests with a glitter few other pianists can equal. Rarely has "Reflets dans l'eau" so transcended the piano's percussive nature. Next to Wild's succulent Albeniz and Granados, Alicia de Larrocha's classic interpretations seem monochromatic and wiry…. A disc to treasure."—Fanfare

"Everything that he plays emerges with a clarity and simplicity and a welcome freedom from eccentricity. Each jewel in this shimmering collection is played with consummate artistry that only a true master has at his command…. A pianophile's delight."—American Record Guide
