Description
Recorded at Columbus, Ohio's Fernleaf Abbey in 1994 (on a Baldwin) and at London's St. Barnabas Church in 1984 (on a Bösendorfer), these distinctive performances of Beethoven's piano sonatas Nos. 29 ("Hammerklavier") and 18 ("Hunt") are remarkable for their buoyancy and clarity.

"Surely the 'Hammerklavier' sonata has rarely been approached with less reverence—and has rarely emerged with less stodginess.... It's a performance that plays up Beethoven's rough-and-tumble exuberance; even the slow movement avoids any hint of the sanctimonious. The impetuous performance of Op. 31/3 ... has a similar freshness of spirit."—Fanfare

"Although Wild is a very dedicated artist, he has never wavered from his conviction that a piano recital ought to be entertaining. And he has never centered his repertory on the dozen most serious masterpieces ever composed, although when he was past 80 he made a recording of Beethoven's 'Hammerklavier' Sonata that pianists half his age might envy."—Boston Globe

"Op. 31, No. 3, or the "Hunt," finds Wild fully in control of those elements of alternation between pomposo and elegant precision that so animate it. The watchword is clarity throughout and fingerwork is lucid. Wild avoids mannerisms, rhetorical point making, stylistic over-inflation and extraneous gesture."—MusicWeb International
