Description
From the tranquil times before the war through the German occupation of Europe and its subsequent liberation, Victory in Europe collects scenes of civilian life, footage of Hitler by Eva Braun, military maneuvers filmed by Darryl Zanuck and George Stevens, celebrity visits by Clark Gable and Ernest Hemingway, and victory celebrations—all in color. In The Pacific War, American Marines and many of the great filmmakers of the day captured color footage of such events as the Coral Sea in flames, Guadalcanal littered with corpses, the raising of the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi, and even the deportation of Japanese-American citizens to internment camps. Though we tend to remember World War II as a series of black and white newsreels, which remove it somewhat from the immediacy of the "real world," color film stock was indeed available both to amateur and professional moviemakers. This French documentary—narrated in English—collects color film clips from many sources (many of them never shown before) to present World War II in color, as it happened.
