One of the first "art films" to gain international acclaim, this silent era milestone remains the most prominent cinematic example of German Expressionism. The 1919 film employed distorted perspectives, sharp angles, twisted architecture, and other devices to create the splintered psyche of the title character (Werner Krauss), a deranged carny hypnotist who unleashed a spidery sleepwalker (Conrad Veidt) to act upon his murderous whims and carnal desires. This Special Collector's Edition has been remastered at the visually correct speed of 18 frames per second and contains English translations of the original hand-painted titles, as well as a new score inspired by German avant-garde music of the early 20th century.
