Every week about 50 New Yorker cartoonists each submit ten ideas, yielding 500 cartoons for only 20 spots in the magazine. Arguably, then, the most brilliant single-panel-gag cartoonists in the world create hundreds of cartoons a week that never see the light of day. Sam Gross, for example, has had more than 12,000 rejected cartoons since 1962 (he knows—he's numbered them).
