|
Bette Davis reunites with Now, Voyager costars Claude Rains and Paul Henreid for this angst-ridden drama from 1946. Davis plays Christine Radcliffe, a piano teacher and kept woman of famous—and sadistic—composer Alexander Hollenius (Claude Rains). Paul Henreid is Karel Novak, a cello virtuoso and Davis's former lover, whom she believes died in WWII. But when Novak resurfaces unexpectedly, Radcliffe attempts to keep their previous relationship a secret from Hollenius, who has invited Novak to perform Hollenius's concerto with his orchestra. Lots of great music here—Beethoven, Wagner, Schubert—including one of Erich Korngold's most memorable scores. Ernest Haller shoots the film with a film noirish gloss.
