|
Dashiell Hammett's Academy Award–nominated adaptation of Lillian Hellman's cautionary play about fascism (written before Pearl Harbor) was a patriotic hit in 1943, earning four Oscar nominations and Best Film honors from the New York Film Critics Circle. Paul Lukas delivers an impassioned Oscar-winning performance as German underground leader Kurt Muller, who is hunted down from Germany to Washington, D.C., by Nazi operatives. Davis plays his wife. Reprising their Broadway roles are Lucile Watson in an Oscar-nominated performance as a socialite whose complacency is "shaken out of the magnolias," and George Coulouris as a shady Romanian blackmailer.
