One of the Gordon Highlanders captured by the Japanese in Singapore during World War II, Alistair Urquhart somehow survived two years of torture and disease in the jungle as a slave laborer building the infamous Burma Railway and the bridge on the River Kwai. He was later imprisoned on a Japanese "hellship" when it was torpedoed, killing nearly everyone on board—but not Urquhart, who spent five days in a raft in the South China Sea. But his miraculous saga was not yet over, as Urquhart was then sent to a mine near Nagasaki, and two months later was struck by the blast from the second atomic bomb, dropped just ten miles away. Found by the U.S. Navy in late August 1945, and by then a barely-living skeleton, Urquhart was able to shower for the first time in three and a half years. This unfiltered account is the harrowing and extraordinary story of a young soldier who survived three disastrous encounters that killed nearly all of his comrades.
