A principal member of the De Stijl group of Dutch designers and artists, alongside such figures as Piet Mondrian and Gerrit Rietveld, architect and theorist Robert van 't Hoff (1887–1979) designed buildings, published essays, and provided financial support for the avant-garde movement. His view of the architect's role exemplified the movement's utopian ideals, and van 't Hoff took a hands-on approach during construction of some of his most famous buildings. Seen here in black and white photos and drawings are such masterworks of early 20th-century architecture as the Verloop Summer House and the Villa Henny—one of the earliest houses to be built out of reinforced concrete and one of the first in Europe to reflect the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright.
