From 1859 to 1905, a number of photographers from widely varied cultural and ethnic backgrounds plied their trade from the Maghreb to Turkey, creating images for sale while collectively amassing a vast documentation of the region's landscapes, towns, monuments, and peoples. Gardens of Sand collects 90 original sepia photos, by such photographers as James Robertson, Wilhelm Hammerschmidt, G. Lekegian, Antoine Beato, Felix Bonfils, Otto Shoefft, Emile Bechard and Sulayman Al-Hakim of Damascus.
