Michael Doucet and his band play Cajun music for the ages, staying true to themselves whilst coming up with ear-catching, jaw-dropping arrangements of tunes from other idioms. Examples here include a La La-style cover of James Brown's "I'll Go Crazy," a swing version of John Coltrane's "Bessie's Blues," and a rocking take on Mississippi Fred McDowell's "You Got to Move." As always, their two-steps and waltzes are sublime. (The Bamako of the title is in Mali, West Africa, while Carencro is a suburb of Lafayette, Louisiana; both locales inspired songs that are among the album's 11 tracks.) "We play North American music that originates only from one area, French Southwest Louisiana. But our music and its themes are universal in the realm of the human condition, which means it touches everyone in a heartfelt way that can't be denied. There's no better way to assuage pain than to hear a story song about overcoming and living with pain, nor is there a [more] hearty way to laugh than to laugh together within a crowd of people. We are a dance band with a story, an old story about tears, love and laughter."—Michael Doucet, in Pop Matters
