Born in Frankfurt in 1578, Adam Elsheimer was unknown until he moved to Rome in 1600, and by 1610 he was dead, yet the young artist left his mark on the coming century to a degree out of all proportion to his brief career. In his small-scale works in oil on copper, Elsheimer revolutionized the handling of light and shadow in his meticulously detailed landscapes and interiors, introducing novel ways of handling complex narratives as well as inventing new subject matter; Claude, Poussin, Rembrandt, and in particular Rubens all felt his influence. Illustrated with 110 black and white and 130 color plates and figures, including several single- and double-page detail views, this major study catalogs 60 works by Elsheimer.
