Description
This is the first complete collection of the legendary chamber music concerts begun in 1961 by violin virtuoso Jascha Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky. This budget-priced, 21-CD boxed set comes in a deluxe clamshell box, with facsimile labels on the cardboard sleeves and a new introduction by Heifetz expert John Maltese. Along with musicians such as Arthur Rubinstein, William Primrose, and Leonard Pennario, the duo perform works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorák, Franck, Gličre, Haydn, Handel, Kodály, Martinu, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Turina, Vivaldi, and others.

"There's something visceral about Heifetz's sound: almost every one of the 40-some violinists I've interviewed attested to it; and those violinists, like Aaron Rosand, fortunate enough to have heard him live claim to have been electrified by its vibrancy. Among those who considered him the pinnacle of his art: Oistrakh, Szeryng, Stern … Rosand, and, later, Perlman (who considered him his 'god,' the greatest of all violinists past and present)."—Fanfare

"His breadth, poise, and perfect regard for the turn of a phrase constantly left his hearers spellbound. Nothing that he undertook was without a finish so complete, so carefully considered and worked out, that its betterment did not seem possible…. For the moment it is sufficient to say that he is supreme; a master, though only 16, whose equal this generation will probably never meet again."—New York World, on Heifetz's American debut
