After the evacuation of the British army at Dunkirk in May 1940, Britain's primary weapon of defense in World War II was her air force. The exploits of the RAF's bomber crews and fighter pilots featured regularly on the radio and in newsreels, while the men themselves were the objects of great admiration. Yet many of the airmen who fought for England were not even British. Exiled from six occupied countries, flying with or alongside the RAF, these pilots were keen to fight, just as their home countries wanted to stay in the war, but the Air Ministry considered the new reinforcements to have been thrust upon them. This book chronicles the efforts of these courageous and often undervalued men.
