Even after the United States entered war with the Axis powers in 1941, Hitler's U-boats threatened to destroy the vital supply of equipment, fuel, and food being shipped to the island nation of Great Britain—from January to August 1942, Germany sank 609 Allied ships while losing only 22 U-boats. In March 1943, another 82 ships went down in the Atlantic.
