Description
Even after the United States entered war with the Axis powers in 1941, Hitler's U-boats threatened to destroy the vital supply of equipment, fuel, and food being shipped to the island nation of Great Britain—from January to August 1942, Germany sank 609 Allied ships while losing only 22 U-boats. In March 1943, another 82 ships went down in the Atlantic. But the Allies had been implementing improved weapons and strategies all along, and in April only 39 ships were sunk, at a cost of 15 U-boats, while in May, six subs were lost in a fierce battle with Convoy ONS5, and an attack on Convoy SC130 saw five U-boats sunk with no Allied losses. Germany lost more than 40 submarines that month—a quarter of its operational fleet—and never regained its advantage. From extensive archival research and interviews with key survivors on both sides, Ed Offley tells the gripping story of how, during a 12-week period in the spring of 1943, battle-hardened American, British, and Canadian sailors turned the tide in the Atlantic.

"Long before there was D-Day, there was D-Day in the North Atlantic Ocean for England. In Turning the Tide, Ed Offley delivers the definitive bible of how the Allies in March and May of 1943 turned defeat into victory against an armada of German U-boats determined to strangle resupply lines to England. The book delivers high suspense on the storm-tossed North Atlantic by taking readers inside the U-boats and the Allied convoys as well as American, English and German high commands racing for technological advantage at sea. In the end, Offley's masterful account not only probes what gave each side an edge but reveals the bravado it took for a rather small group of Allied and German sailors to fight to the death in one of history's great naval struggles."—Carl LaVO
