Produced through a dangerous process that involved applying a gold and mercury amalgam to bronze and then burning off the mercury, ormolu resulted in gilded ornamental metalwork of unsurpassed beauty; in Britain, the name of Matthew Boulton became synonymous with the finest ormolu in the neoclassical style of the late 18th century. This catalog, extensively researched and illustrated with 241 color photos and 141 black and white photos and drawings, is a thorough account of the vases, candelabra, clock cases, and other ormolu ornaments produced by the Boulton factory from 1768–1782, and of the customers who bought them. It also describes the methods by which ornaments were designed, made, and marketed, as well as Boulton's personal interest in promoting the business.
