Inspired by the embroideries produced by England's Royal School of Art Needlework, which she saw at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Candace Wheeler educated herself to equal and then surpass the accomplishments of advanced European designers. She emerged as the leading American textile designer of the late 19th century, moving from embroidery to the design of fabrics and interiors, writing influential books on decorating, and becoming a driving force behind the professionalization of women in the design field. With 86 color and 102 black and white illustrations, this catalog looks at 98 works by Wheeler, her daughter Dora Wheeler, and other associates.
