In 1941, at the age of 24, Yvette Chauviré was promoted to étoile ("star") of the Paris Opera after her stunning 18-minute solo in Serge Lifar's ballet Istar, and was to remain there until her retirement in 1972. A Cannes Film Festival selection, this portrait of France's greatest ballerina (originally titled Yvette Chauviré: Une ètoile pour l'example) was also featured in Lincoln Center's acclaimed 2008 series devoted to the ballet films of Dominique Delouche. The DVD includes rare footage of Chauviré in scenes from L'écuyère, La Péri, Giselle (with Nureyev), and The Dying Swan, as well as in coaching sessions with other notable ballerinas.
