Aruna Sairam performs the Carnatic music of South India, deeply rooted in its temple culture of devotional song. "Of all the spiritual paths in Indian tradition, the practice of bhakti—devotion—is often considered the quickest way to connect with a divine source. The vehicle for bhakti can be silence or meditation, but most often it is expressed in mantra chanting, as well as song. The sound is considered to be more important than the meaning of the words; better put, the sound is the meaning…. Sairam is considered a master of the vocal craft … [and] she gives her unbridled offering of passion to these nine poems that discuss the intense yearning for something outside and beyond ourselves…. This is the goal of bhakti, to willingly surrender the heart to the great emotion of all humankind."—Sing Out!
