Description
Many call this self-taught musician who worked as a tanner America’s first great composer. William Billings wrote zestful popular hymns and sacred choruses using simple imitative counterpoint—hence their designation as "fuging tunes." He often wrote his own hymn texts, a departure from the colonial New England tradition of using psalm verses.

“The performances are notable for their impeccable musicianship, full-throated tone, warmth and security of blend and expressive intelligence, qualities that have long characterized the Clerkes’ musicmaking.… Highly recommended.”—Chicago Tribune

"Exquisite performances…. The finest recording of Billings available today…. The anthems of William Billings were much more than church music, their biblical imagery often mixed with patriotic messages. Sung at town halls and taverns, wherever people gathered, the sound had a communal richness. Yankee singers would latch on to various parts, high or low, producing a thick harmony of doubled voices, an effect that Billings called ‘sweet and ravishing beyond expression.' That's the William Billings sound, the sound of American democracy singing. "—NPR All Things Considered
