Vince Guaraldi played in the 1950s with bandleader Woody Herman and in a quartet led by Latin-style vibraphonist Cal Tjader. While with the quartet, he began cutting his own piano-trio albums. With tunes like "Manhã da Carnaval," "Samba de Orfeu," and "O Nosso Amor" from the Antônio Carlos Jobim/Luiz Bonfá score for the film Black Orpheus, this 1962 release remains a prime example of jazz musicians embracing Brazilian samba and bossa nova. And with his original composition "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," Guaraldi became the second jazz musician to score a Top 40 hit, following Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" in 1961 (making him a household name among jazz fans even before his "Charlie Brown" scores). Other selections include "Moon River" and "Since I Fell for You."
