"With pipes reminiscent of Billie Holiday, Peyroux lollygags behind the beat, croons in French, and pulls off breezy jazz treatments of works by songsters as diverse as W.C. Handy and Elliott Smith," wrote U.S. News & World Report in a 2005 article on artists the Grammys shortchanged. Like fellow contemporary jazz star Norah Jones, Peyroux's vocal style has a smoky, muted complexity that can wrap itself around a number of genres. Peyroux wrote or co-wrote all 11 tracks on this new album, which includes the surprisingly funky "You Can't Do Me" and the upbeat "Something Grand" (written after watching the Democratic Presidential debates), as well as "Our Lady of Pigalle," "To Love You All Over Again," "I Must Be Saved," "River of Tears," "Homeless Happiness," "Love and Treachery," and "Damn the Circumstances."
