For Nellie Mae Rowe (1900–1982), the old Southern world of shotgun shacks, small churches, flowering trees, and farm animals shined in her drawings, paintings, and sculpture. She taught herself art after the death of her second husband in 1948, and for the rest of her life the dreams and memories she recorded in her art were a balm for her loneliness. The Art of Nellie Mae Rowe is the most substantial gathering of her work to date, with 80 color reproductions and photos and ten black and white images, revealing the artist's intuitive, extraordinary color sense and the vibrancy and variety of her work.
