When Dave Brubeck died on December 5 at age 91, he left a gaping hole in the jazz world. Both his upbeat personality and his ebullient musicmaking will be much missed. Thankfully, we have his recorded legacy, which will sustain jazz lovers for eons. Included here are 1960's Time Out plus Time Further Out ('61), Countdown: Time in Outer Space ('62), Time Changes ('64), and Time In ('66). Brubeck, the brilliant saxophonist Paul Desmond, and their cohorts perform "Take Five," "Blue Rondo à la Turk," "Countdown," "Three's a Crowd," "Unsquare Dance," "It's a Raggy Waltz," "Elementals," "World's Fair," "Time In," "Lost Waltz," and more. "He was a favorite among millions of fans, a master of difficult meters who brought jazz to the mainstream in the 1950s and '60s…. Time Out became the first jazz record to sell a million copies. Dave Brubeck appeared on the cover of Time magazine. His quartet—saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello—remained the most popular jazz group in the 1960s…. Brubeck's integrated group brought jazz to young audiences. He was, for many Americans, their initiation into jazz."—NPR
