|
Sydney Pollack's 1969 film is at once a war drama, a satiric comedy, and a heroic action adventure. During the Battle of the Bulge, Major Falconer (Burt Lancaster) leads his small squad to an unbombed medieval keep in the Ardennes Forest, where they find an aging Count (Jean-Pierre Aumont) and his priceless collection of art. While the Count takes them in, hoping they'll protect his treasures from the advancing Germans, Falconer woos the Count's young wife, and his sergeant, Rossi (Peter Falk), romances the baker's wife. As the Germans approach, a deadly game of possession for the keep ensues. Scott Wilson and Bruce Dern are also featured.
