Description
Armenian American painter Arshile Gorky (1904–48) is a pivotal figure in mid-20th century American art, providing a bridge between European modernism and the abstract expressionists who established the New York School. This succinct yet accessible catalog, accompanying a 2010 retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Tate Modern, London, examines a career that began in tragedy (he painted two versions of The Artist and His Mother, based on the only surviving photo he had of her after the Armenian genocide) and ended in suicide, yet produced work of international significance. The book is illustrated with 49 reproductions and four page-filling detail views that compare Gorky's work with art by Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Pollock, Joan Miró, and Fernand Léger.
