Goethe's aperçu that "a quartet is a conversation among four educated equals" is borne out in these newly remastered recordings, made from 1977–1981 for Calliope. With his 16 string quartets and the final Grande Fugue, Beethoven revolutionized this demanding genre, to which he devoted himself from the last years of the 18th century until his death. Listening to these works in sequence is to follow the composer's evolution step by step as his musical language becomes ever more powerful and complex. This seven-disc set comprises the Quartets Op. 18, Nos. 1, 2 ("Compliments Quartet"), and 3; Op. 18, Nos. 4, 5, and 6 ("La Malinconia"); Grosse Fugue Op. 133 / Quartets Opp. 95 and 127; Quartets Op. 59 ("Razumovsky"), No. 1, and Op. 74 ("Harp"); Quartets Op. 59 ("Razumovsky"), No. 2, and Op. 130; Quarte t Op. 59 ("Razumovsky"), No. 3, and Op. 131; and Quartets Opp. 132 and 135. "The Talich Quartet's Beethoven cycle must be numbered among the finest currently available. These are eminently civilized performances with refinement, excellent ensemble, and warmth of tone to commend them."—Gramophone "You can tell a lot about a string quartet's strengths and weaknesses by hearing it play Beethoven…. The venerable Talich Quartet played Beethoven's B-flat String Quartet, Op. 18, No. 6, with scrupulous balances, spot-on intonation and an understated eloquence in the phrasing…. The Talich players did justice to the score's emotive ebb and flow while also making sure that classical proportion and musical architecture remained intact. What struck one most, though, was the sheer beauty of the Talich's playing."—Washington Post
