In 1952, 20th Century Fox rolled out its top contract players to bring five O. Henry short stories to the silver screen. In "The Cop and the Anthem," Charles Laughton is a hobo who can't get arrested on a cold night; Marilyn Monroe costars. Dale Robertson and Richard Widmark go head to head in the noirish murder mystery "The Clarion Call." Anne Baxter and Jean Peters appear in "The Last Leaf," a touching story about hope in the face of dispair. A ten-year-old terrorizes kidnappers Fred Allen and Oscar Levant in "The Ransom of Red Chief." And Jeanne Crain and Farley Granger costar in O. Henry’s signature tale of grace and selflessness, "The Gift of the Magi." Each story is introduced by a chain-smoking John Steinbeck.
