|
This lavishly mounted Thai epic from 2003 was directed by a prince, financed by a queen, and edited for Western markets by the director's former film school classmate, Francis Ford Coppola. The film depicts a crucial period in Thai history (circa 1540) in which the nation fought a civil war while fending off an invasion from neighboring Burma. The story focuses on Thai princess Suriyothai (M.L. Piyapas Bhirombhakdi), who must choose between her love for a young warrior and the king she has to marry to unite a kingdom. The film displays an astonishing attention to detail in the numerous battles, assassinations, beheadings, extravagant sets and costumes, and an especially awesome use of elephants.
