Before Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind, Christopher Guest dissected the American film industry with this 1989 tale of a film-school award winner who "goes Hollywood" and sells out for glamour and fame, only to find Tinseltown breaks its stars as fast as it makes them. Kevin Bacon plays the naive auteur from Ohio; other names of note appearing here in lead roles and cameos are Jennifer Jason Leigh, J.T. Walsh, Teri Hatcher, Eddie Albert, June Lockhart, Fran Drescher, and Roddy McDowall. Here too are Guest's Spinal Tap costar Michael McKean, and uncredited performances by Martin Short and Elliot Gould.
