Set in the earliest days of Redwall Abbey, only just founded by Martin the Warrior, this 12th Redwall book begins when a young hedgehog maid named Trimp visits the unfinished abbey. She sings a half-remembered song recounting the adventures of a warrior called Luke, the father Martin barely knew, who deserted him when he was only a child. Joined by Trimp, Dinny Foremole, and Gonff, the mischievous Prince of Mousethieves, Martin embarks on a perilous journey to the northland shore, where he finds the wreckage of the great red vessel Arfship, wedged high between pillars of stone. Three ancient warriors live there, guarding a book that tells of Luke and his relentless pursuit of the evil pirate stoat Vilu Daskar. Beginning with Redwall, first published in 1986, Brian Jacques' wildly popular fantasy series for readers 9 to 15 relates the heroic adventures of the talking mice, squirrels, hares, hedgehogs, and badgers who inhabit Redwall Abbey in Mossflower Wood. There are 22 novels in the long saga of Redwall (the final story was released posthumously in 2011), set in various eras of Mossflower history.
