Description
This classic tale for children of all ages, first published in 1943, follows the travels and adventures of a carousel horse. Shy at first, Gigi is befriended by a girl named Lili, and he becomes the favorite of the children who ride the carousel in the Wurstelprater in old Vienna. But the carousel is neglected during World War I, and Gigi is sent to a small merry-go-round in Paris, and later goes to London and eventually to America. On each carousel, Gigi befriends new children, and misses them when he must move on, but he never forgets Lili. Elizabeth Foster wrote the story of Gigi for her own two children. She and illustrator Ilse Bischoff knew Europe well, and together capture the charming atmosphere of London, Paris, and old Vienna. This reproduction edition includes a 1990 foreword by the author's daughter and the addition of Foster's grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the dedication page; otherwise, it remains faithful to the original in the text and Bischoff's delightful ink-washed illustrations.

"The children's carousel story that has probably been the top favorite for generations, Gigi retains in this new edition all the charming original illustrations, all the mystic wonder of the first edition.... Although it is a children's story, it is one for anyone to enjoy who can still remember holding serious conversations with a favorite carousel horse."Merry-Go-Roundup, the magazine of the National Carousel Association
