|
Gerry Mulligan, whose "cool" approach to jazz and complex orchestrations contrasted with the frantic improvisations of bebop stalwarts like Charlie Parker, was a major innovator in the 1950s with his pianoless quartet albums. The last one he recorded in that mode, this 1959 date with trumpeter Art Farmer, bassist Bill Crow, and drummer Dave Bailey includes "What Is There to Say?" "Just in Time," "Festive Minor," "My Funny Valentine," "News From Blueport," and "Utter Chaos." "To me, entranced, it was the sound of happiness, of a limpid intelligence—of an unassailable gaiety. And that gaiety, for me, has remained Mulligan's great gift: the gift he had and the gift his music gave…. Bari is a cumbersome axe for solo playing, but absolutely essential to big band arranging…. And Mulligan, whether he was playing with one of his pianoless quartets or with Dave Brubeck or with his wonderful (and unsuccessful) Concert Jazz Band … thought of himself primarily as a big band player."—Frank McConnell, Commonweal
