This 1963 date showcases the baritone sax master's rich way with ballads. With a small group that includes trumpeter Art Farmer, trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Bill Crow, and drummer Dave Bailey, Mulligan performs three of his own songs (including "Festive Minor"), Chopin's Prelude in E Minor, "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," and "Manhã de Carnaval" (from Black Orpheus). "One of the few saxophonists to play lead on baritone, rather than tenor or alto sax. He'll be remembered best as the man who helped lead the cool revolution in jazz in the late 1940s…. He moved to New York after World War II, where he found work with drummer Gene Krupa, which led him to his groundbreaking work in 1949 as composer and arranger for trumpeter Miles Davis, sessions that resulted in the Birth of the Cool."—NPR "I think we've not yet begun to understand … how much his music has affected the way we think music is supposed to sound…. The next time you hear a jazzy music score, the next time you're in a little club with a half-decent band … check out those open chords, those silences, that subtle and loping beat. You'll be hearing a little bit of Mulligan."—Frank McConnell, Commonweal
