Charles Schulz called him "a treasure." Roy Crane virtually invented the adventure comic strip with Wash Tubbs in 1924, and many a square-jawed superhero owes a debt to Crane's hard-hitting adventurer Captain Easy. But during World War II Crane left Captain Easy to create a more realistic fighting man, Navy pilot Buz Sawyer. This retrospective from Fantagraphics reprints all of the Buz Sawyer daily strips published during the war: Buz crash-lands behind enemy lines; he's taken aboard a Japanese submarine; and he tangles with a dangerous lady spy named Sultry. The book includes eight foldout, full-sized reproductions of the Sunday color strips, which feature Buz's tail-gunner pal Roscoe Sweeney.
