Description
The magnificent country houses built in Britain between 1890 and 1939 turned out to be the last monuments to a vanishing age, popularly depicted in Downton Abbey. Some of the most remarkable were those that not only replicated the look of old buildings, but used genuinely old materials and even incorporated whole Tudor buildings moved from other places. Many of them were mammoths of domestic architecture, built in confident assurance during an era of extraordinary prosperity, but were sadly unsuited to the economic and social changes that would soon follow. Originally published in 1980 and here thoroughly revised and reillustrated with hundreds of color and black and white photos, this book recounts the architectural and social history of the era, describing the clients, the architects, the styles, and accoutrements of Edwardian country houses. Country Life editor-at-large Clive Aslet writes of this fascinating world, and of the sweeping changes in the way country houses of this period were lived in and used.

"Superb and beautifully illustrated.... Scintillatingly presented without a loss of scholarship."Guardian (London)
