The nonprofit Society of Singers aids singers who face financial and medical crises. And who better to raise funds for this worthy cause than a cadre of vocal greats from the realms of pop, soul, R&B, and jazz? From icons Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, and Ella Fitzgerald to contemporary stars Jane Monheit, Diana Krall, Steve Tyrell, and Peter Cincotti, the 20 tracks of Great Voices, Great Songs cover a sweeping array of musical styles and eras. Perhaps no other song on the album personifies this concept better than “Summertime,” a duet by George Benson and Jill Scott originally performed during the special Broadway’s Best on Bravo and now available for the first time on CD. Fittingly, seven of the selections are by recipients of the Society of Singers’ “Ella” award.
