This biography from Russian music authority Andreas Wehrmeyer, originally published in Germany in 2000, looks at Sergey Rakhmaninov (1873–1943) as the last musical proponent of romanticism, and one whose significance as a composer cannot be overstated. Born in Novogorod, Russia, Rakhmaninov studied piano under Tchaikovsky, and in 1892 established his own reputation as a composer with the Prelude in C-sharp Minor. After the 1917 Revolution he emigrated to the United States, where he became renowned for the cool stoicism of his performances.
