Donald Sultan rose to prominence in the electrified atmosphere of New York City's downtown art renaissance of the late 1970s and 80s. Before graffiti and postmodern figuration were filling gallery walls, Sultan's simple iconography and complex technique of gouged, spackled, and painted grids of tar-encrusted linoleum tiles captured immediate and enthusiastic attention. Today he is perhaps most associated with his "black lemon" iconography. This oversized monograph is a comprehensive survey of the artist's oeuvre through his first 30 years, with color reproductions of more than 100 works and detail views up to 22 x 14 inches.
