Description
The American Revolution was the five-year war that made America a nation—President Barack Obama referred to it in his Inaugural Address and American schoolchildren are steeped in its history—yet the fog of myth tends to shroud the realities. In this book the path to war is starkly documented through British caricatures of the politicians and generals involved, and perhaps surprisingly are for the most part favorable to the Colonists. Kenneth Baker presents cartoons from the period, rather than the romantic patriotic pictures more widely published in the 19th century, including many from his personal collection of caricatures. For Britain the war was a disaster—a vain attempt by George III and Lord North to control a country half a world away, which already possessed a tradition of independence, representative government, and a free press. It was seen by many in England as plain foolhardiness, and the king and his generals—Howe, Burgoyne, Cornwallis, and others—were mercilessly lampooned. Washington, the hero, was largely spared, although there are also some surprising and dark elements to the American victory that turn up here.

"The book is compulsive—utterly absorbing.... Caricature, I realize, is a great indicator of how the winds of public sympathy (and hostility) were blowing: a window into that most evanescent of things, the way it felt at the time."—Times (London)
