German air ace Oswald Boelcke was a national hero during World War I, and the youngest captain in the air force. Earning Germany's highest military medal, the Pour le Mérite, while still only a lieutenant, he had 40 aerial victories at the time of his death in 1916, and the whole of Germany mourned his passing. This is the story of the fighter pilot that the Red Baron himself sought to emulate, first published in English in the 1930s. Boelcke established his reputation on the Western front first in reconnaissance, then in scouts, until, along with Max Immelmann, he became the best known of the early German aces. After Immelmann's death, Boelcke was taken off flying and traveled to the Eastern front where he met a young pilot named Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, who would later fly in Boelke's Staffel group.
