This is the story of a pioneer of aerial combat, who flew for the German air force in World War I. The son of a factory owner in Dresden, Max Immelmann was sent for pilot training in November 1914 and stationed in northern France as a reconnaissance aviator. But scout fliers on both sides soon began to attack one another in the air, and with the advent of the synchronized machine gun on the Fokker Eindecker monoplane, Immelmann quickly earned 15 victories, developing the half-turn loop maneuver named for him and becoming one of the world's first ace fighter pilots. He was the first airman awarded the Pour le Mérite, Germany's highest military honor, and after his death the medal was known as the Blue Max. Originally published in 1934, this account is based primarily on Immelmann's own words, along with the expert analysis of his brother Franz, who was also a fighter pilot in the war.
